2018 Summer Youth Job Corps

Meet members of our 2018 EXPO Center Summer Youth Job Corps(SYJC) cohort. The Friends of EXPO Center has hired 40 interns, whom have been selected and have attended an orientation night. Along with the orientation, interns and their parents will attend a SYJC Parent Night, and two paid training sessions prior to the start of the internship. The Natural History Museum will continue to partner with the Friends of EXPO, and has hired 20 interns for this summer.

We have also developed two new exciting partnerships for this summer. We are excited to place two interns at the California African American Museum(CAAM), and two interns at Community Services Unlimited(CSU). Interns placed at CAAM will become museum docents, and will work within the production, marketing, and gallery curation departments. Community Services Unlimited(CSU) manages and operates the EXPO Center Urban Farm/Garden. They are also currently building South LA’s first organic grocery store located at 65th and Vermont. Interns placed at CSU will work with their team on marketing, entrepreneurship, and will learn about healthy nutrition, and Farm to Table programs.

Teen Leadership Culmination Dinner


The EXPO Center Teen Leadership Culmination dinner took place on Monday, March 12. Our special guest and Board Member, Councilman Curren Price, helped celebrate the graduation of 120 teens from this eight-week program. Teens learn critical college and employment readiness skills such as writing a resume, executing a job search, completing an application, interviewing skills, and office etiquette. During the month of April, the graduates will begin interviewing for our Summer Youth Job Corps internship program. The Friends completely fund this program and will provide salary stipends to 40 teens this summer. Our partners at the Natural History Museum will hire 20 teens to intern at their site. This year we have budgeted $108,000 to support this vital program.

New Soboroff Sports Field Nears Completion

The new Soboroff Sports field is nearing completion! Our new, updated sports field features several improvements including new turf, safety netting, and new restroom facilities. It will soon be available for recreational use, just in time for our spring sports season. The existing Soboroff sports field has been relocated to the southern end of Bill Robertson Lane and Martin Luther King Boulevard(still in Exposition Park) to pave the way for construction of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The Soboroff Sports Field will continue to be operated by EXPO Center, the Los Angeles Departments of  Recreation and Parks, and supported by The Friends of EXPO Center.

With the construction of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art underway, the Los Angeles Football Club’s Banc of California Stadium opening in April 2018, and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum’s renovation underway, the transformation of Exposition Park has begun.

EXPO College Workshops

We are excited to support two College Workshops taking place at EXPO Center on April 22, 2017. Jennifer Adrian-Thiroux, an Independent Educational Consultant, and retired LAUSD College Counselor will lead two extremely informative sessions for both Middle and High School students. The workshops are free and open to ALL students in the community. Parents are encouraged to attend and Spanish translation is available.

KROMA Quartet at EXPO Center(4/6)

The EXPO Community Concert Series presents KROMA Quartet at EXPO Center on April 6, 2017. This FREE concert is OPEN to the public, and will take place in Comrie Hall(2nd floor-EXPO Swim Stadium) from 6:30-7:30pm.  ‘KROMA Quartet is comprised of talented, strong, and diverse women of color’. Collectively they have performed at the Grammy’s, on American Idol, and have played for major motion picture soundtracks.
